W&M Women’s Tennis Tops Campbell on Senior Day

WILLIAMSBURG — William & Mary women’s tennis celebrated Senior Day by winning for the 10th time in its last 11 matches and wrapping up perfect weekend behind a 6-1 victory over CAA newcomer Campbell on Sunday afternoon.

The Tribe (14-6) claimed the doubles point for the 16th time in 20 matches, before winning five of the six singles contests in straight sets to improve to 6-1 in CAA play. Graduate students Yu Chen (No. 1) and Mila Mejic (No. 3), juniors Hedda Gurholt (No. 2) and Ine Stange (No. 5), and freshman Francesca Davis (No. 6) notched singles wins in the victory.

Prior to the match, W&M honored its graduating class of Yu ChenKensie CricchioMila Mejic, and Julia Monroe.

Now It Happened

  • Davis and Mejic gave the Tribe the early lead in doubles behind a 6-3 win over Tamsin Hart and Mialy Ranaivo at No. 3. It marked the pair’s second win of the weekend as they moved to 5-0 on the season.
  • After a Campbell (11-7) win at No. 2, Chen and junior Emma Fernald clinched the point with a win at No. 1. The Tribe tandem topped Lena Karlovcan and Eeva Ristola, 7-5, for its 10th win at the top spot.
  • Mejic continued her impressive singles play, winning for the ninth-straight match at No. 3. She dropped just two games in rolling to a 6-2, 6-0 win over Hart. Mejic remained undefeated in CAA play at 7-0, while improving to 15-9 overall.
  • Stange made it 3-0 with a win at No. 5. She won her second of the weekend in matching 6-2 sets over Mariana Ossa. Stange upped her season mark to 17-7, including a 6-1 ledger in CAA action.
  • Davis clinched the Tribe win by claiming the No. 6 position. The Tribe rookie downed Karlovcan, 6-3, 6-4, for her second victory of the weekend. She is 17-10 overall and 9-2 on line six.
  • Gurholt and Chen cemented the Tribe victory with wins at the top two positions. Gurholt moved to 6-1 in CAA play with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Lily Chitambar at No. 2. She improved to 24-5 overall and 15-3 in dual-match play.
  • Chen won her 18th match of the season, upending Mialy Ranaivo, 6-4, 7-5, on line one. She upped her mark to 13-6 in dual-match.
