WILMINGTON, N.C. — No. 71 William & Mary men’s tennis ran its win streak to three matches behind a 4-1 victory over American Athletic Conference foe Wichita State on Thursday afternoon at the UNCW Tennis Courts.
W&M (8-6) captured the doubles point for the third match in a row by winning at the top two positions to take a 1-0 lead. Graduate students Satchel Benn (No. 2) and Bill Duo (No. 6) as well as freshman Oliver Hague claimed straight-set singles wins to cement the Tribe victory.
How It Happened
- After a Wichita State (3-13) win at No. 3 doubles, Benn and Hague pulled the Tribe even with their seventh win in a row at No. 2. The tandem upended Ziwen Ju and Vanja Hodzic, 7-5, to improve to 12-5 on the year and 8-4 on line two.
- The Tribe’s top tandem of graduate student Konstantinos Raptis and Duo clinched the match’s initial point with a tiebreaker win at No. 1 over the Shocker pair of Misha Kvantaliani and Richey King. The W&M duo won its second-straight and ran its mark to 8-3 at the top spot.
- After a Shockers win at No. 3, Duo put the Tribe back in front with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Ju on line six. It was Duo’s sixth-straight victory as he improved to an impressive 10-2 in singles and 5-0 in dual-match action.
- Hague continued his win streak with a straight-sets victory, 6-3, 6-4, over Luke Bracks at No. 4. The Tribe rookie won his fourth in a row and team-leading 18th match of the season.
- Benn clinched the Tribe victory with his second consecutive win at No. 2. He topped Alejandro Jacome, 6-4, 7-5, improve to 14-9 overall and 6-3 on line two.
