RICHMOND — Playing in pouring rain and windy conditions for nearly the entire contest, the William & Mary lacrosse team fell at VCU, 15-8, on Wednesday afternoon.
Although VCU (1-4) scored the game’s first six goals, the Tribe (2-3) answered with back-to-back scores by Jaylin Locke and Paige Gilbert to trail by just four at halftime.
However, the Rams opened the second half on a 4-1 run to build a 10-3 advantage and maintained at least a six-goal margin during the remainder of the contest en route to securing the non-conference victory.
Tribe Standouts
Gilbert led the Tribe and equaled a career high with three goals to go with a career-best six draw controls. The Doylestown, Pennsylvania, native also recorded two ground balls and a caused turnover.
Olivia Gladstein (1g, 1a), Maresa Moyer (1g, 1a) and Anna Dawson (1g, 1a) added two points apiece, while Moyer also finished with two caused turnovers, a draw control and a ground ball.
Goalie Marin Wilhelm played the final 45:00 and posted nine saves with a .500 save percentage.
Inside the Numbers
VCU outshot W&M, 36-18, including a 26-12 margin in attempts on goal.
The Rams also owned advantages in draw controls (16-10) and ground balls (21-15), while they committed eight fewer turnovers (17-25).
The Opposition
Ashley Karn totaled a team-high six points (1g, 5a) to go with three caused turnovers to lead VCU, while Mia George (3g, 1a) and Sam Palmer (3g) also provided offensive production.
Sarah Jones finished with a team-best four draw controls.
Notes
The all-time series is now tied at 2-2 … At least six different W&M players have scored in every game this season … Locke’s goal in the second quarter was the first of her career.
