WILLIAMSBURG — William & Mary suffered a 77-64 loss to Campbell on Thursday night inside Kaplan Arena.
The Tribe (7-11, 2-3 CAA) connected on double-digits 3-pointers for the second-straight game and had four players in double figures, but the visiting Camels shot 61.8% from the floor in winning their second-straight CAA contest.
Sophomore Chase Lowe led W&M in scoring with 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting to go with six rebounds and seven assists. Sophomore Trey Moss finished with 13 points, while juniors Gabe Dorsey and Matteus Case chipped in 12 apiece. Dorsey knocked down four 3-pointers, while Case was 3-of-4 from distance.
The Tribe hit its first three 3-pointers before using a 7-1 run capped by a pair of Moss free throws to take a 13-7 lead nearly six minutes into the game.
Anthony Dell’Orso, who finished with a game-high 26 points, scored nine-straight for Campbell (9-9, 3-2 CAA) to give the visitor a 16-15 on a driving lay-up at 11:38 mark.
In total, the Camels hit 12 of their first 17 shots. Campbell scored eight in a row all from Laurynas Vaistaras (4) and Jasin Sinani (4) to open up a 26-20 advantage with 8:11 remaining in the first half.
W&M answered with a 7-0 run to retake the lead. A pair of Lowe lay-ups sandwiched around a Case corner 3-pointer put the Tribe back in front 27-26 at the 5:31 mark.
Campbell used a 10-1 run to open up its largest lead of the opening half. Dell’Orso scored the first seven, before a Gediminas Mokseckas 3-pointer extended the Camels’ lead to 36-28 with 35 seconds left in the half.
CU shot 61.5% in the opening 20 minutes and led by five at the break.
Campbell scored the opening four points of the second half to push the visitor’s lead to nine, 40-31, less than a minute and a half into the frame.
Six quick Tribe points closed the gap to a single possession. Moss converted an old-fashion 3-point play, before Case knocked down a wing 3 to cut the deficit to 45-42 at the 15:01 mark.
Campbell tallied nine-straight to extend its advantage to its largest at 14. An Alex Kotov 3-pointer with 8:24 remaining push the cushion to double-digits for the first time, before Elijah Walsh and Sinani followed with a dunk and lay-up, respectively, to give the Camel’s a 62-48 lead with 6:50 left.
The Tribe twice closed within nine, including the final time on a Moss 3-pointer with 2:39 left, but could get no closer the rest of the way.
Along with Dell’Orso, Vaistaras notched a career-high 21 points on 10-of-12 shooting. As a team, the Camels scored 58 of their 77 points in the paint.
The Tribe shot 41.5% from the field, including knocking down 12-of-28 (42.9%) from 3-point range.
