Three Second-Half Goals Lift W&M Field Hockey to Win at Richmond

(Tribe Athletics)

RICHMOND — William & Mary field hockey scored three times in the second half to knock off in-state rival Richmond, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon. The Tribe (9-8) closed the regular season winning four of its final five matches.

W&M scored twice off penalty corners over a 1:32 span late in the third quarter to take control. Senior Allison Goodwin converted with a shot from the top of the area in the 40th minute for her first goal of the season. Junior Pyper Friedman and senior Maddie McGaughey recorded assists on the operation. It was Goodwin’s third career game-winning goal.

The Green and Gold generated a second penalty corner in short order to increase its lead. The initial shot from the top was blocked by the Richmond defense. The ball eventually deflected to junior Kellen Richbourg in the middle of the circle,  and she lifted a shot just over a number of stray sticks and into the right side boards. It was Richbourg’s third goal of the season and third in the last four contests.

With the Spiders (7-11) pushing to close the gap, W&M scored on the courter with just 1:35 remaining to provide the final margin. Graduate students Lauren Curran and Lonica McKinney played give-and-go along the right flank. Curran touched around a UR defender into the top of the circle and back-handed shot into the right side boards for her team-leading 11th goal of the season.

It was Curran’s seventh goal in the last four matches. She moved up into 11th on the Tribe’s career scoring list with 31 goals and 15th in points (66).

Richmond outshot the Tribe 7-1 in the opening 15 minutes, generating all three of its penalty corners. The Tribe defense was up the task, stymying the Spiders attempts, including senior Maddie George’s lone save of the afternoon. George recorded her second clean sheet of the season and the seventh of her career, which ranks 10th in Tribe history.

W&M limited the Spiders to just one shot the rest of the way and finished the contest, outshooting the home team 10-8. The Tribe generated four penalty corners, cashing two in for goals.
