WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Junior midfielder Pyper Friedman scored twice in the first half to lift William & Mary field hockey to a 2-1 upset of No. 12-ranked Wake Forest on Friday evening.
While the victory was the first of the young season for W&M (1-1), it was the Tribe’s 12th under head coach Tess Ellis against Top-20 opponents, including the fourth over the ACC. It marked the second-straight season the Green and Gold tallied a road win over a ranked ACC foe after topping Duke last season in Durham.
Playing against her older sister and three-time All-ACC selection Nat Friedman, Pyper gave the Tribe the lead just five minutes into the contest on her first goal of the season. Friedman collected a pass from graduate student Lonica McKinney at the top of the circle and wrapped a shot around into the left side boards to give the visitor a 1-0.
Wake Forest, which was coming off a 1-0 upset of No. 7 Michigan last weekend, equalized just before the end of the first quarter. Off a free hit, Ava Moore dribbled inside the right side of the circle and finished near post to tie the match at one. It was her second goal in as many games.
Just before halftime, Friedman struck again to give the Tribe the lead for good. Off a penalty corner, graduate student Lauren Curran’s shot was redirected from the right side of the circle by junior Sara Bartzen. The deflection found a wide-open Friedman on the back post and she finished into an empty cage. It was Friedman’s first career game with two goals.
From there, W&M’s defense, led by senior goalkeeper Maddie George, took over. In total, the Tribe held Wake Forest 0-of-7 on penalty corner opportunities and limited the dangerous chances in front of the Green and Gold cage. George posted four saves in the victory.
Wake Forest (1-2) outshot the Tribe, 12-5, on the evening, but put just five on goal compared to three for W&M. The home team held a 7-3 advantage in penalty corners as well, but the Tribe cashed in one of its three opportunities for the winner.
