TOWSON, Md. — William & Mary continued its impressive shooting from 3-point range and Anders Nelson topped 20 points for a second-straight game, but Towson shot 52.1% from the field, scored 50 points in the paint and Cam Holden delivered a triple-double in a 92-73 win on Saturday afternoon at SECU Arena.
Nelson was nearly perfect from the floor for a second-straight game, hitting 7-of-8 overall and 5-of-6 from 3-point range on the way to a team-high 22 points. The performance came on the heels of an 8-of-8 and 27-point effort in a win over Stony Brook on Thursday night.
As a team, the Tribe (9-14, 4-6 CAA) connected on 12 3-pointers and shot 57.1% (12-of-21) from distance. It came a game after setting a school record at 81.3% (13-of-16) in the win over the Seawolves.
For Towson (16-7, 8-2 CAA), Holden scored a game-high 24 points to go with 10 rebounds and 10 assists for the first triple-double against W&M since 1985.
Playing without the CAA’s leading rebounder Noah Collier, who missed the game due to injury, the Green and Gold started fast. W&M scored the game’s first eight points, including a pair of 3-pointers from Nelson. His second triple just over two minutes into the game forced a Tiger timeout.
The Tribe led by as much as nine on a Gabe Dorsey 3-pointer just four minutes into the contest, but Towson hit three-straight 3-pointers as part of a 9-2 run. Christian May’s 3-pointer at the 12:33 mark drew the home team within a point, 16-15.
The Tigers took their first lead of the game, 23-21, on a Nygal Russell steal and fast-break lay-up with 9:07 left in the opening half.
Back-to-back 3-pointers from Jack Karasinski and Dorsey put the Tribe back on top, 33-28. Karasinski returned to the Tribe lineup after missing four games with an injury suffered in the opening half at UNCW on Jan. 14. He finished with seven points in 18 minutes.
Towson answered with a 10-0 run to take the lead for good. Charles Thompson, who scored 20 points on 9-of-10 shooting, tallied six during the run. The Tigers outscored the Tribe 21-7 over the final six minutes of the first half to take a nine-point lead, 49-40, to the locker room. TU shot 63.6% in the opening 20 minutes.
The deficit remained nine, 63-54, on a Chase Lowe driving lay-up seven minutes into the second half.
The Tigers used an 11-2 run to put the game out of reach. May, who scored a career-high 14, hit a trio of free throws and knocked down a triple for six straight, extending the margin to 74-56 with 9:36 left.
Junior Ben Wight turned in a strong game for W&M with 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting and team-high six rebounds. Dorsey made it three players in double figures with 12 points on 4-of-7 from 3-point range.
