CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Senior Mila Saric represented William & Mary on a national scale at the NCAA Singles Championship on Monday evening.

The two-time CAA Player of the Year won the opening set and battled tough before falling in three sets to No. 32-ranked Carolyn Campana of Wake Forest in the opening round.

Saric, who is ranked No. 118 nationally, broke Campana in the opening game and led early 2-0 in the first set. The Wake Forest senior broke back and pulled even a three. Saric responded with an immediate break of her own to love on the way to winning the set’s final three games. Her cross-court winner in a deuce game lifted the Tribe senior to a 6-3 first-set win.

In the second set, Campana jumped out to a 4-0. Saric battled back to narrow the gap to 5-4, before the Deac forced a third set with a 6-4 win.

The Tribe senior found herself in an early break hole in the final set. She broke back and moved in front at 3-2. Saric led 4-3, but Campana ripped off the final three games to pull out the three-set win, 6-4.

Campana advanced to face No. 49 Kylie Collins of Texas in round two on Tuesday. Collins upset No. 3 seed Petra Hule of Florida State in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5.

Saric concluded her W&M career as one of only four players in program history to be named the CAA Player of the Year on multiple occasions. She wrapped up her senior season at 25-6. For her career, Saric tallied 117 combined wins between singles and doubles and her 71.9 singles winning % (69-27) ranks sixth in program history.
