WILLIAMSBURG – The William & Mary lacrosse team concluded its home slate with a 14-4 setback to James Madison (JMU) at Busch Turf on Wednesday afternoon.
Things looked good for the Tribe (3-7, 0-2) in the opening minutes, as it quickly jumped out to a 3-2 lead following a goal by Sabrina Schrader off an assist from Sophie Kopec with 21:42 showing.
However, JMU (6-4, 1-1) held W&M scoreless for a span of more than 36 minutes en route to rattling off 10 unanswered goals.
The Tribe ended the scoring drought with Belle Martire’s team-leading 35th goal of the season off an assist from Olivia Gladstein with 15:05 remaining, but W&M was unable to narrow the margin any closer during the remainder of the contest.
Tribe Standouts
Kopec led W&M with two points (1g, 1a), while Martire, Schrader and Lauren Russell also found the back of the cage. Martire and Schrader added two ground balls apiece.
Goalie Elsa Rall posted a season-high 15 saves, while Courtney Vasquenza recorded season highs with three caused turnovers and five ground balls. Caroline Hertzberg (3 GB) and Kathleen Cozzi (2 CT, 5 GB) also contributed to the effort.
Inside the Numbers
JMU outshot the Tribe, 42-27, and held advantages in ground balls (29-24) and draw controls (13-7). Additionally, the Dukes committed one fewer turnover (17-18).
The Opposition
Katelyn Morgan came off the bench to lead JMU with a team-high five points (3g, 2a), while Charlotte Haggerty, Rachel Matey and Taylor Marchetti tallied two goals apiece.
Goalie Molly Dougherty totaled 13 saves and a .765 save percentage.
Notes
Rall moved into fourth place on W&M’s all-time saves list with 460, passing Vikki Bovoso (448) … She needs just 25 more to pass Jacque Orsi for third all-time … The contest was originally scheduled to be played at 5 p.m. but was moved up to 2:30 p.m. due to expected inclement weather … JMU now leads the all-time series 35-34-1.
