Registration is now open for the Yorktown Freedom Run, which takes runners through parts of the Yorktown Battlefield on Memorial Day.
Previous years’ races have drawn more than 400 runners. After spending nearly 30 years hosting the race as a 5K, last year marked the first time the race transitioned into an 8K format to attract more competitive racers.
While the main competitive race again will be an 8K, there will be a 5K fun run for those not looking to run for time. The 8K is designated a Grand Prix event for Peninsula Track Club members, and the club will provide timing and scoring for runners.
The course begins and ends at York High School, with runners passing undisturbed redoubts, George Washington and French headquarters, and vintage cannons.
The 8K race will begin at 8 a.m., with the 5K fun run starting at 8:15 a.m.
Awards will be given to the top three male and top three female finishers overall and to the first three finishers in the 40-years and older masters class. Medals also will be awarded to the top three finishers in each age and gender category.
Same-day race registration will run from 6:30 a.m. to 7:40 a.m. and will cost $25.
All proceeds from the race will go toward the Yorktown Rotary Club, which provides scholarships at local high schools and supports a wide range of youth and community services.
