Historic Triangle athletes put pen to paper Wednesday during National Signing Day ceremonies across the region.

Athletes who play football, volleyball, swimming, soccer, softball and field hockey all announced where they will be playing their respective sports at the next level.

The biggest intrigue locally on National Signing Day was where Lafayette senior linebacker Cheyton Pine would play football. Pine, who had verbally committed to Pittsburgh, chose between Pittsburgh, Virginia Tech and Iowa State on Wednesday.

In front of family and friends, Pine put on a Pittsburgh hat that signified his decision to stick with the Panthers after receiving late pressure from the Hokies and Cyclones.

“I was shaking. It was one of those moments that was more than a four-year decision,” Pine said about his decision to commit to Pittsburgh. “I had a good connection with [the coaching staff]. I’ve been talking to these guys for almost a year now. That was one of the main factors.”

While those committed to play for Division I schools signed their letters of intent, those playing at the Division III level will not be signing letters of intent because Division III schools cannot award athletic scholarships. Despite not formally signing letters of intent, the Division III signees were still included in the ceremonies.

This post will be updated as new information becomes available.
