After healing from a hamstring injury suffered in the spring, wide receiver Ben Edwards was signed by the New York Giants to the practice squad last week.
The York High School alumnus and University of Richmond product has a prior history with the Giants, having tried out with the team each of the past two years after going undrafted out of college.
Earlier this year, Edwards participated in a three-day rookie mini-camp in the spring and earned an invitation to compete in the Giants’ Organized Team Activities. During the mini-camp, Giants coaches praised Edwards’ quickness and ability to make people miss.
Staying healthy has hampered Edwards’ staying power with the organization, however. Last year, Edwards unsuccessfully attempted to try out with the Giants while still recovering from ACL surgery.
After having a good showing this spring, Edwards injured his hamstring and was ultimately waived from the team. While recovering from his hamstring injury, Edwards served as a wide receivers coach for York High School’s football team.
Last Tuesday, the Giants hosted a free-agent workout that included NFL veteran players and unproven prospects. With his hamstring injury fully healed, Edwards showed up to the tryout and impressed New York coaches, earning a practice squad contract from the team.
Practice squad players earn a minimum of $6,600 per week, which totals $112,200 over an entire regular season stint.
