Tabb faced a stiff challenge from Poquoson at home during Wednesday’s Group 4A West semifinal game.

In what has become a familiar trend for the Tigers over the years, Tabb found a way to win and defeated Poquoson 3-0 to clinch a spot in the Group 4A state tournament.

The Tigers got on the board with 11:35 left in the first half, giving Tabb a 1-0 halftime advantage.

A stalemate in the second half was broken when Tabb scored its second goal of the night with 3:12 remaining. A Miya Denison goal with 37 seconds remaining clinched the win for Tabb.

The Tigers (17-1) advance to play in Thurday’s Group 4A West championship game against Western Albemarle.

York Ousted in Penalty Strokes

York’s field hockey season came to a gut wrenching close Wednesday night as the Falcons fell 2-1 in penalty strokes against Western Albemarle in the Group 4A West semifinal round.

In the penalty strokes, both teams had their first attempts blocked before both teams scored on their second attempts. Both teams were held scoreless on their third attempts.

With one shot remaining for each team, York could not find the back of the cage as Western Albemarle drained its attempt to secure the victory and a trip to the Group 4A state tournament.

York took a 1-0 lead over Western Albemarle with 12:33 left in regulation before giving up a game-tying goal with nearly seven minutes left.

Neither team was able to score during three overtime periods, resulting in the game-ending shootout.

York (11-6) finishes its season one win short of guaranteeing a spot in the state tournament.

Individual statistics were not reported for this match.
