Some of the top youth football players from Hampton Roads, Northern Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania will descend upon York High’s Bailey Field for the first two rounds of play in the Football University National Championship Dec. 5 and 6.
A 64-team single elimination tournament, the Football University National Championship is in its fourth year as one of the largest youth football events annually.
The Football University National Championship consists of teams from across the U.S., including a local Hampton Roads team.
Sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students from each region try out for their respective teams. The top 30 players in each age group, which is broken down by grade, are selected for a regional team and play full-contact football against other assembled teams.
Teams from across the country are paired against other regional opponents for the first two rounds of play. Bailey Field will host games played by the Hampton Roads, Northern Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania teams.
As teams from the East and West Divisions advance, they will play teams from farther away. Eventually, the top two teams from the East and West Divisions will square off in the semifinal round held in Naples, Fla.
The championship game will pit the top team from each division against one another for the Football University National Championship title on Dec. 22.
Before the championship game can be played however, teams will have to survive and advance through the earlier rounds of play including the games at Bailey Field. The games played at Bailey Field are open to the public at a price of $5 per day.
