The William & Mary women’s golf team opened the Nittany Lion Invitational on Saturday in good shape, shooting 603 (+27) through two rounds to enter the final day in third place. Host Penn State leads the eight-team field at 587 (+11), with Delaware in second at 599 (+23).
The Tribe’s leader, and leader of the entire 56-player tournament, was senior Alessandra Liu(Cynwyd, Pa.), who set or tied three school records with her play.
Liu shot a 69 (-3) in the morning, tying the Tribe record for best round and setting a career-best, then came back with an even-par 72 in the afternoon to open a one-stroke lead on the field. Her 36-hole score of 141 (-3) is two strokes better than the old program record, which was jointly held by Liu and Betsy Birchall ’13.
Liu also now has eight rounds of par or better in her career, tying the all-time mark first set by Morgan Stepanek ’10.
Sophomore Katie Edelblut (New Hope, Pa.) was second for W&M on the day, improving two rounds over lunch to card 77-75 and is 15th overall at 152 (+8).
Junior Mia Zanghetti(Jacksonville, Fla.) opened with 75 and finished with a 79, and is tied for 16th at 154 (+10).
Senior Tina Chang (Mineola, N.Y.) also opened with a 75 and is tied for 30th overall at 158 (+14), matching the total of freshman Elizabeth Choi (Syosset, N.Y.) who had a round of 77 to her credit.
Freshman Riley Corona (Cave Creek, Ariz.) rounded out the team effort with a pair of 81’s, and is tied for 40th overall at 162 (+18).
The Tribe’s first round total of 296 (+8) is tied for the fourth-best round ever, and the 36-hole score of 603 (+27) is also the fourth-best score in school history.
The Nittany Lion Invitational finishes Sunday with one round, beginning with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
