Warhill’s field hockey team got off to a hot start on the road Wednesday against Colonial Heights, winning 6-0 with ease during the team’s first action of the year.
The Lions, who had both preseason scrimmages canceled, adjusted to the pace of play quickly and were led by Haley Smith in the first half. Smith found the back of the cage twice in the opening 30 minutes for Warhill.
Julia Gravel scored Warhill’s third goal of the first half after a ball was thrown into the circle down the right side. Gravel was waiting in the circle and tapped it past Colonial Heights goalkeeper Mackenzie Cloniger, who finished the game with 21 saves.
Carrying a 3-0 lead into the second half, Warhill picked up the pace and scored thrice quickly following the intermission.
The second half was dominated by the Cooke sisters, Kayla and Jessica. Kayla Cooke scored a pair of second-half goals, while Jessica Cooke scored once in the second half and finished the game with three assists.
Despite playing in their first action of the season, Warhill Head Coach Kristen Castano saw positives in her team’s play despite what she perceived as some early rust.
“We had great give-and-go plays down the field,” she said of her team. “Once we got into the circle we needed to pick up our aggression. I think for them, the first game is always shaky because of the excitement and maybe some nerves.”
The Lions (1-0) will enjoy the Labor Day weekend before resuming their season at home against Heritage Sept. 10.
