While visiting the University of Richmond for a football camp July 15, Bruton senior Daniel Jones caught a 4-pound large mouth bass.
It was not the only catch to come as a result of the camp.
The visit proved successful enough for the school to reel in Jones, who verbally committed to play college football for the Spiders on July 31.
After receiving his only scholarship offer from Richmond, Jones camped at the school and came away impressed by the campus and the football program.
“I liked the coaches and how they carried themselves and how they talked to me,” he said about the Richmond coaching staff. “It’s a really good program and school.”
A versatile 6-foot, 190-pound athlete for Bruton, Jones impressed Richmond coaches with his ability to play multiple positions at a high level.
Bruton head coach and Daniel’s father Reggie Jones said Richmond coaches lined his son up at different positions during the camp to test his abilities. Jones’ performance warranted a scholarship offer from the Spiders.
Jones said Richmond is recruiting him to play on the defensive side of the ball, but were unsure of where exactly he would fit in. Jones said he expects to end up at safety or outside linebacker in college.
For Bruton, Jones is a jack-of-all-trades on defense. Last season, Jones lined up at defensive back, middle and outside linebacker for the Panthers and recorded 45 tackles, 6.5 sacks, 6 tackles for loss and a forced fumble for a touchdown.
