Jamestown senior Jeff Wolons dominated Kecoughtan on Thursday, scoring seven of his team’s eight goals and breaking the Jamestown single-game scoring record in the process.
Wolons’ record-setting performance helped the eagles rout Kecoughtan 8-0 at Wanner Stadium, ending the game with 3:48 left per a Virginia High School League rule that ends a game if one team holds an eight-goal lead at least 20 minutes into the second half.
With 29:04 left in the first half, Wolons got the Eagles (2-0) on the board after collecting the ball from just outside the box and placing it into the lower-left corner of the goal.
Less than nine minutes later, freshman Antonio Gonzalez delivered a ball into the box from 30 yards away. Wolons, a Virginia Tech soccer commit, took the pass in stride, juked left past Kecoughtan (2-3-1) goalkeeper Ian Gehris and placed the ball easily in the back of the net.
Despite controlling possession for most of the first half and putting shots on frame, Jamestown capitalized on scoring chances twice.
“[Kecoughtan] did a great job defensively for basically 70 minutes,” Jamestown coach Bobby O’Brien said. “Once we started getting a couple in, they kind of let down.”
The second half was more of the same for Jamestown as its attackers pummeled the Kecoughtan net with a barrage of shots.
Gehris performed admirably for the Warriors, making a kick save with 35 minutes left in the game and deflecting a point-blank Wolons shot over the crossbar with 21:07 left.
With 19:12 left and the Eagles still ahead 2-0, Jamestown freshman Francisco Santucci drew a straight red card for an attempted tackle deep in the Kecoughtan zone.
The Eagles could not be stopped despite playing a man down.
About three minutes after the red card, Wolons stole the ball deep in Kecoughtan territory and ripped a shot across the face of the goal to record his third goal of the night.
Wolons struck again with 12:03 left on the clock as he delivered a corner kick from the left side that curled toward the goal and deflected off Gehris’ hands and into the net.
Less than a minute later, Duncan McDevitt collected a pass from Ben Carper and squeezed it underneath Gehris to give Jamestown a 5-0 lead.
With 7:44 left in the game, Sanjay Das passed the ball to Wolons, who sprinted down the right side of the pitch, dribbled into the box and fired a rocket into the upper-90 area of the goal. Just over two minutes later, Wolons took another pass from Das and performed a similar set of moves and blasted another shot into the back of the net from the right side.
After scoring his sixth goal of the game, which tied the previous Jamestown record of six goals in a single game by Hunter Hartnett in 2012, Wolons’ teammates could be heard encouraging him to go for the record.
“Once I had a couple I knew I could set the record,” Wolons said.
And he did.
With 3:48 left in the game, Wolons dribbled through what seemed like the entire Kecoughtan defense before finding himself in on goal from the far left side. Wolons shot the ball from a narrow angle, but his shot deflected into the goal off Messick for the school-record seventh goal.
“It’s pretty awesome that it’s set in history,” Wolons said of his record. “I actually knew the player that held the record, so it’s a friendly competition to beat him.”
Despite the outstanding individual performance from Wolons, O’Brien did not think his team played as well as the score might indicate.
“To be honest, it wasn’t that great of a performance,” O’Brien said. “Jeff did a lot of that. We had to rely on him heavily tonight. If we do that too much we won’t have a lot of team success moving forward.”
Jamestown will host Conference 19 compatriot Grafton at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Wanner Stadium.
