Girls Basketball Roundup: Lafayette, Walsingham Roll in Season Openers

Sophomore transfer Rachel Lia gave a strong performance in her debut with Lafayette’s girls basketball team Monday, scoring a game-high 22 points on 11-15 shooting from the floor as the Rams cruised past Colonial Heights 64-23 at home.

Lafayette, which built a 33-12 lead at the half, also got 10 points and six steals from Kenya Holiday while Jill Curtis added nine points and 10 rebounds.

The Rams (1-0) begin Bay Rivers District play Tuesday when they visit crosstown nemesis Bruton.

Seaman, Barnes Shine as Walsingham Dominates Summit Christian

Stephanie Seaman and Ashley Barnes both stuffed the stat sheet as Walsingham Academy breezed past Summit Christian 65-14 in the Trojans’ season opener Monday.

Seaman led the Trojans with 23 points on 10-15 shooting from the floor to go along with seven steals and six assists. Barnes finished with 12 points, eight rebounds and five steals while Emily Mauk and 6-foot-2 eighth-grader Catherine Williams added eight points apiece.

Defensively, Walsingham held Summit Christian to five points or less each quarter.

HRA Edged by Unbeaten Richmond Christian

Led by Mikayla Scorsone’s 14 points, Richmond Christian overcame a one-point deficit at the half to edge Hampton Roads Academy 61-49 on Monday.

Leigha Arcand netted a game-high 15 points to lead the Navigators (0-1) while Sophie Kingsbury finished with 14.

Richmond Christian improved to 3-0 on the season with the victory.
