Conference Volleyball Roundup: Warhill, Lafayette, Bruton and Tabb Win Tournament Openers

warhillAlex Koon had 7 kills and 6 aces while Colby Norris finished with 6 kills and 5.5 blocks as top-seeded Warhill breezed past visiting Southampton 3-0 in the opening round of the 3A Colonial Rivers Conference 25 tournament Monday.

The Lions held Southampton to eight points or less in each set, including a 25-2 win in the second.

Cori Clifton posted a team-high 8 kills for Warhill, which will host New Kent in Wednesday’s semifinals.

Lafayette Tops BRD Rival York

Abby Oren tallied 16 kills and 10 digs as Lafayette defeated Bay Rivers District foe York 3-0 in a 3A Colonial Rivers Conference 25 tournament quarterfinal Monday.

The Rams, who won by scores of 25-15, 25-15 and 25-16, also got 35 assists and 8 digs from Julia Howard, as well as 12 digs, 7 kills and 4 blocks from Shaylee Ruescher.

York, which was led by Sophie Pereira (15 assists) and Mackenzie Chaffin (6 kills, 2 blocks), saw its season end with the loss.

Lafayette will play in the conference semifinals Wednesday.

Bruton Sweeps King William

Gabby Calloway contributed a team-high 13 kills, 8 digs and 6 aces, and Mykael Johnson served 7 aces as Bruton won its 2A Conference 33 tournament opener 3-0 (25-22, 25-9, 25-5) over King William on Monday.

The Panthers can clinch their second region tournament berth in a row with a victory over Windsor in the tournament semifinals Wednesday.

Tabb Solves Smithfield to Win 3-0

Abby Carney posted a tremendous stat line of 39 assists, 12 digs,7 kills and 1 ace in Tabb’s 3-0 victory over Smithfield in the 4A Conference 19 tournament opener Monday.

The Tigers overcame a tough battle from their Bay Rivers District counterparts in the opening set to win 31-29 before taking the next two 25-8, 25-21.

Ashley Muhic added 13 digs and 5 aces and Emily Kois had 9 kills for the Tigers, who will play top-seeded Jamestown in the conference semifinals Tuesday.
