Behind another stout defensive performance, Lafayette remained unbeaten on the season after shutting out Smithfield 28-0 on the road Friday.
The Rams, who are holding opponents to a hair over nine points per game this season, limited Smithfield to 65 yards of total offense, Coach Andy Linn said.
Lafayette, which led 14-0 at the half thanks to quarterback Brendan McGinty’s two touchdowns — one running and one passing — came into the game averaging more than 48 points per contest but managed 28 against a Smithfield defense Linn lauded.
“Both defenses played exceptional tonight,” Linn said. “Smithfield, playing on their home field, they came to fight. But anytime you shut out an opponent and still score 28 points, it’s a good win.”
McGinty ran in Lafayette’s first score from four yards out and later found John Douglass for an eight-yard touchdown pass to give the Rams a 14-0 lead at the half, a cushion plenty big enough for Lafayette’s defense on this night.
Douglass found the end zone for the second time in the third quarter with an eight-yard touchdown run to put Lafayette ahead 21-0.
Later in the period, McGinty threw his second touchdown pass of the night, this time to Trey Neville, for a 10-yard score to make it 28-0 for good.
The Rams will carry their unbeaten 7-0 record (6-0 BRD) into next Thursday’s home game against New Kent.
Grafton Holds Off Warhill for 14-6 Victory
Playing its first game of the season without quarterback standout D.J. Dobbins, Grafton went up 14-0 at the half and held on to beat Warhill 14-6 on the road for its fourth win in a row Friday.
Dobbins, who also starts in the Clippers secondary, injured his collarbone in last week’s win over York and will likely miss the remainder of the regular season.

Trevaun Walker, who rushed for more than 100 yards, ran in two touchdowns during the first two quarters as Grafton built a 14-0 lead at the half.
The score would remain that way until late in the fourth quarter when Warhill’s Bryson Dannewitz, who started at quarterback in place of the injured Keron Dedmon, hooked up with Collin Bright for a 10-yard touchdown with a little more than four minutes to play in regulation.
The Lions would get one last chance for a potential game-tying touchdown, but Grafton’s Tavaris Noel picked off a Dannewitz pass with just over a minute to play to seal the victory.
With the win, Grafton improved to 5-2 overall and 5-1 in the Bay Rivers District and will visit Bruton next week.
The Lions dropped to 1-6 overall (1-5 BRD) and will play host Jamestown next week at Wanner Stadium.
Spruill Carries York Past Jamestown, 40-10
Chris Spruill ran for more than 200 yards and two first-half touchdowns in York’s 40-10 win over Jamestown on Friday.
Jamestown took an early 3-0 lead, but York responded with 19 unanswered points beginning with a J.R. Jordan touchdown pass to Devin Campbell late in the first quarter.
York would go up 13-3 on Spruill’s first touchdown of the night after he took a direct snap and dashed 64 yards into the end zone.
After York’s Simon Cobb intercepted a pass on Jamestown’s ensuing possession, Garrett Gatz cashed in a 1-yard touchdown run to stretch the Falcons’ lead to 19-3.
Jamestown answered right back, as Mark Lipscomb broke off a 59-yard touchdown run less than a minute later to trim the Eagles’ deficit to 19-10.
With just a few minutes before halftime, York marched downfield and scored on Spruill’s second touchdown of the game, this time from one yard out, with 41 seconds left in the second quarter.
York would enter the half on top 26-10 and score 14 unanswered points during the final two quarters to pull away.
The Falcons, who improved to 4-3 overall (4-2 BRD) with the victory, will play Tabb in what should be one of the more competitive Bay Rivers District games next week at Bailey Field.
Jamestown (0-7, 0-6 BRD) is still searching for its first win and will host Warhill at Wanner Stadium.
