Field Hockey Roundup: Bruton, Grafton Blank Opponents to Win BRD Openers

BrutonIn a matchup of previously unbeaten teams and Williamsburg-area rivals, Shaylea Burkett and Dasha Hill scored two goals apiece as Bruton shut out host Lafayette 5-0 in the Bay Rivers District opener for both teams Tuesday.

Taylor Everett added one goal and one assist for the Panthers (5-0, 1-0 BRD), while Tori McCurdy and Kayla Frazier each provided one assist.

Gabby Boesler made 15 saves in goal for Lafayette as Bruton dominated the possession throughout.

Hoepfner Leads Grafton Past Jamestown

Grace Hoepfner scored two goals as Grafton won its Bay Rivers District opener 3-0 over Jamestown at Wanner Stadium on Tuesday.

Erin Malone scored the first goal for the Clippers while Hannah Burkhard finished with one assist.

Jamestown goalie Samantha Tiffany made six saves in the loss.

Ware, HRA Shoot Past WCA

Mauri Ware recorded her first hat trick of the season as Hampton Roads Academy knocked off Williamsburg Christian Academy 5-1  at home Tuesday.

Sophie Kingsbury added one goal and one assist in the win for HRA, which outshot the visiting Eagles 34-8.

Caroline Nice scored WCA’s lone goal, while Gussie Branscome (3) and Elisabeth Powell (10) combined to make 13 saves.

The Navigators return to the field Friday to take on rival Walsingham under the lights at Christopher Newport University at 6:30 p.m.

Walsingham Improves to 7-0

Walsingham scored in the closing minutes of each half while defenders Bridget Killilea, Molly Menoni and Rachel Clancy shut down the opposing attack as Walsingham improve to 7-0 with a 2-0 shutout of Nansemond-Suffolk Academy on Tuesday.

Abby Cryts scored late in the first half to make it 1-0 at the break, and Stephanie Seaman scored with 4.7 seconds left in regulation for the Trojans.
