Thanks to the Virginia High School League’s new statewide postseason alignment, eight teams from the Bay Rivers District have advanced to the region semifinals in their respective sports and will play for a state-tournament berth on Wednesday.
In soccer, three teams — York’s boys, Warhill’s girls and then Lafayette’s boys — will play back-to-back-to-back at King George High School beginning at 4 p.m.
Grafton’s baseball and boys soccer teams will host their region semifinal opponents in York County while the Clippers’ softball team travels to play Kings Fork.
York’s softball team is also on the road — the Falcons play Brentsville at Massaponax High — as is the school’s girls soccer team, which plays at John Champe High School.
Rounding out the district’s region semifinalists is Tabb’s girls soccer team, which travels to play Wilson High School.
Also today is the semifinal and finals of the 4A South Region individual tennis tournament.
Conference 19 champion Anna Walter of Jamestown will play Glenn Allen’s Karen Pak in the singles semifinals at 9 a.m. The winner advances to play in the championship later in the afternoon, with that winner earning a trip to the 4A state final four.
Walter is also in the hunt for a region doubles title. She and teammate Mairin Shea won their opener Monday and will play Nansemond River’s Kim Stiehler and Erin Bonney in the quarterfinals at 11 a.m.
