After losing to her older sister Leah in last year’s region singles final, Jamestown sophomore Anna Walter said her expectations this spring were to return, prevail and move on to states.

Mission accomplished.

Walter overcame a tough battle from Glen Allen’s Karen Pak in Wednesday’s 4A South Region singles championship to earn a hard-fought 6-4, 7-5 victory on her home courts at Jamestown High.

The victory earned Walter, who won claimed the inaugural Conference 19 singles crown two weeks ago, a spot in next week’s 4A state semifinals at Liberty University where she will look to accomplish something her older sister never did: win a state singles title.

Later in the afternoon, Walter returned to the courts to join her teammate, Mairin Shea, in the doubles semifinals.

The duo defeated Nansemond River’s Kim Stiehler and Erin Bonney to advance to the final and wrapped up the afternoon with a  6-2, 6-3 over Pak and Julia Jackson of Glen Allen.

Shea will make the trip to Lynchburg with Walter where they will compete in the state doubles semifinals — and finals, if they win — on Friday.

The singles semifinals and final is scheduled for Thursday.
