Paige Majdic gave Jamestown’s girls soccer team a two-goal cushion in the first half, leading the Eagles to a 2-0 victory over Grafton in the 4A Conference 19 semifinals Thursday afternoon.
The match was originally scheduled for Wednesday night but was postponed to 4 p.m. Thursday because of thunderstorms.
Majdic scored her first goal 15 minutes in after Bailey Cristian slotted her a pass from roughly 25 yards out. Majdic then dribbled into the box and rolled a shot past Grafton’s keeper for what proved to be the game-winning goal.
Majdic, though, provided insurance 15 minutes later after punching a lose ball in front of goal into the back of the net. Peyton Helbert was credited with an assist on the score.
Clinging to a two-goal lead, Jamestown eased up its attack in the second half in hopes of preventing injury, according to co-head coach Kevin Dawson.
“I don’t think we were at our normal level of play, but that wasn’t surprising with a 4 o’clock start after being here last night,” Dawson said. “But we played OK. Well enough to get the win.”
With the win, the Eagles advance to play Bay Rivers District rival Tabb in the Conference 19 championship at 6 p.m. Friday at Tabb High.
Both teams are guaranteed a spot in the 4A South Region tournament, which begins Monday, with the winner earning a first-round home game.
