Despite playing without two key starters, including pitcher Molly Rogerson, who took a line drive off her knee in last week’s regular-season finale against Smithfield, York High opened the 3A Colonial Conference 25 softball tournament in dominant fashion.

The No. 2 Falcons scored early and often against No. 7 Poquoson en route to beating the Islanders 13-1 at home. Their reward is a spot in Wednesday’s semifinals against Colonial Heights, which defeated Warhill 4-0 on Monday, with a berth to next week’s 3A East Region tournament on the line.

Maddie Capps pitched well in place of Rogerson, yielding one run on four hits over five innings to improve to 6-1 on the season.

Tiffany Kelly led the offense with five RBI, while Lia Batchelor went 3-4 and scored three times for the top-seeded Falcons, who improved to 17-2 on the season with the win.

“I was pretty nervous coming in [the game] without two starters,” York Coach Amy Hunter said. “Maddie [Capps] pitched really well and everybody did a good job. I was proud of them.”
