Tribe Weekly Roundup: Men’s Golf Places Third at CAA Championships

The William & Mary men’s golf team turned in another solid round Sunday on the final day of the Colonial Athletic Association Championships, finishing at 888 (+24) for the weekend.

Seeded fifth coming into the tournament, the Tribe finished third overall, behind only College of Charleston (874, +10) and Towson (881, +17).

Leading the way for W&M as he did all week long was junior Charlie Kern, who finished with a 74 to end up seventh overall in the standings at 221 (+5).

Aker, Gaouette Toss Four-Hit Shutout for Tribe Baseball in Series Clinching Win Against Hofstra

Sophomores Mitchell Aker and Joseph Gaouette combined to throw a four-hit shutout as William & Mary’s baseball team defeated Hofstra 7-0 on Sunday afternoon at Plumeri Park.

With the win, the Tribe — winners of five of their last six contests — takes the Colonial Athletic Association series two games to one to improve to 27-15 and 11-3 in CAA play on the season.

Offensively, sophomore Ryan Hissey led the Tribe going 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI. Senior Derek Lowe added a hit and three RBIs. Click here for a full recap.

Women’s Lacrosse Defeats ODU, 16-11, on Senior Day

The William & Mary lacrosse team closed out its season with a 16-11 victory against Old Dominion on Senior Day at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field on Saturday afternoon.

The victory helped W&M earn 10 more points in the Optima Health Challenge, which is a yearlong competition between the Tribe (4-12, 1-4) and ODU (3-13), as the College claimed this year’s trophy, 60-35. Click here for details.

O’Connell Wins Pole Vault at Penn Relays

William & Mary sophomore Derek O’Connell soared into the air at the Penn Relays on Friday, winning the collegiate-division men’s pole vault with a height of 4.95m (16-2.75) to highlight the Tribe’s performance at the three-day relay carnival.

On Thursday, redshirt sophomore Nathaniel Hermsmeier ran 14:46.04, his best of the season so far, and sophomore Ryan Gousse (Apopka, Fla.) ran an outdoor-best 14:59.96 in the 5,000 meter.  Hermsmeier’s time was only about 10 seconds off of IC4A qualifier and just six seconds behind his personal-best, while Gousse shaved 25 seconds off of his best time in the race from last year. Women’s Track Earns Three Personal Bests at Penn Relays

The William & Mary women’s track and field team had a spectacular night Thursday at the Penn Relays, with all three athletes who competed coming away with lifetime-best efforts and ECAC-qualifying performances.

In the 3,000m, sophomore Meghan McGovern ran the fifth-fastest time ever in school history and finished eighth in 9:26.39.

Two hours later, juniors Dylan Hassett (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Carolyn Hennessey (Herndon, Va.) finished 11th and 14th, respectively, in the 10,000m run.

Hassett shaved more than 1.5 seconds off of her lifetime-best to cross the finish line in 34:53.27, while Hennessey timed 35:18.28 in her first-ever attempt at the distance.  Hassett now ranks eighth in school history in the event, and Hennessey jumped onto the record charts at No. 11 all-time.
