A new weekly racing series aimed at giving aspiring young bikers trail riding experience begins today at New Quarter Park in York County.
Wednesdays on Your Wheels (WOYW) is a monthlong series of races designed for kids aged 3 through 18 to help develop confidence on their bikes and gain familiarity with mountain bike riding.
The races, scheduled for 5:30 to 7 p.m. each Wednesday starting today through May 14, will be staged on three different courses, all new to NQP: a short course (for children 6 and under), medium course (for elementary and middle school riders ages 11 to 14) and long course (for high school riders ages 14 to 18 as well riders in the open advance class). The open advance class includes advanced riders — participants with clipless pedals are considered advanced — ages 13 and under.
The registration fee is $25 per child or $10 per session. All participants will receive a WOYW wristband and number plate for the front of their bikes. Helmets are required to be worn by each rider, and parents must be present for all races.
A final race will be held from 10 a.m. to noon May 18 that will precede a picnic, awards presentation and prize drawings.
Anyone interested can call 757-890-3513 for more information or to register. Participants can also register before each race, but are encouraged to arrive 15 minutes prior to ensure races begin on time.
New Quarter Park is located at 1000 Lakeshead Drive, adjacent to the Queens Lake neighborhood.
