For the sixth time this season, William and Mary men’s basketball freshman Omar Prewitt was named the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
The Mount Sterling, Ky., native took home the weekly award following a 15-point, five-rebound effort in the Tribe’s lone game last week, an 85-73 victory over Drexel, 85-73.
Prewitt became the first Tribe freshman to be named CAA Rookie of the Week on six occasions, equaling the number of last season’s CAA Rookie of the Year, R.J. Hunter from Georgia State. He also garnered the distinction on Nov. 18, Nov. 25, Dec. 2, Dec. 23 and Jan. 6 to go along with his most recent accolade.
The Tribe won its third straight and for the eighth time in its last 10 games with the victory over Drexel. Prewitt was 5-of-10 from the field and 4-of-8 from 3-point range as part of the Tribe’s high-powered offensive attack. W&M’s 85 points were the most allowed by Drexel in a CAA game since 2008. Prewitt was also a key part of the Tribe’s 11-of-23 effort from 3-point range, which marked the most 3-pointers made in a game against the Dragons since the Tribe had 14 at Drexel in 2008.
Prewitt leads all CAA rookies in scoring, rebounding, steals, 3-pointers made, free throw, 3-point and field goal percentages. Among the CAA leaders, he ranks fourth in free throw percentage (.785) and 3-point percentage (.403), seventh in 3-pointers made (2.1) and field goal percentage (.465), 10th in scoring (14.1), 13th in steals (0.9) and 19th in rebounding (5.0).
W&M travels to Delaware on Wednesday, Jan. 15. Tip-off from the Bob Carpenter Center in Newark, Del., is slated for 7 p.m. Fans can catch the action over the Tribe Radio Network with Jay Colley and Charlie Woollum on the call. The Tide 92.3 FM and 107.9 Bach FM are the flagship stations of the Tribe Radio Network and the audio broadcast can be heard on TribeAtheletics.com.
