William and Mary junior Marcus Thornton added another honor to his resume on Tuesday as he was named the Corvias ECAC Division I Men’s Basketball South Region Player of the Week.

Thornton, who was named the CAA Player of the Week on Monday along with Charleston’s Willis Hall, averaged 25.5 points, four rebounds, 4.5 assists and two steals per game in the Tribe’s pair of victories over Old Dominion and Western Illinois last week.

In the victory over Old Dominion, Thornton scored 22 of his team-high 26 points in the second half to lead the Tribe to its third straight win over the Monarchs. It marked the first time in the series history between W&M and ODU, dating back to 1969 and spanning 85 games, that the Tribe won three straight against the Monarchs. He knocked down a trio of 3-pointers and was 11-of-15 from the free throw line, while adding three assists and three steals.

At Western Illinois, the Upper Marlboro, Md., native helped W&M turn a nine-point first-half deficit into a three-point halftime lead, pacing the Tribe with 15 points in the opening 20 minutes. He finished with 25 points in the victory and also added career-highs in assists (6) and rebounds (6). Thornton connected on 8-of-16 from the field, 5-of-9 from 3-point range and 4-of-5 from the free throw line against the Leathernecks. It marked the Tribe’s fourth non-conference road win of the season, which equaled the school record also set in 1949-50, 1982-83 and 2009-10.

Thornton currently leads the CAA and ranks 43rd nationally in scoring at 19.5 points per game. He is second in the league and 35th nationally in 3-pointers made (2.9), while ranking seventh in the CAA in 3-point percentage (36.9) and 70th nationally. Thornton’s name also appears among the CAA leaders in minutes played (fifth – 35.9), free throw percentage (ninth- 75.6), assists (10th – 2.8), field goal percentage (11th – 41.7) and steals (14th – 0.9).

The Tribe returned to action and opened CAA play Wednesday against Drexel.
