Williamsburg Christian Academy’s girls basketball team has been ranked No. 1 in the first Virginia Independent Schools weekly Division 2 state poll that was released Wednesday.
The Eagles have been nothing short of dominant so far this season, outscoring opponents by an average of nearly 40 points (73-37) per game en route to a 17-0 start under first-year coach Donovan Bridgeforth.
That’s not to say WCA has not been tested. The Eagles defeated Division 1’s No. 8-ranked Liberty Christian 60-57 in their second game of the season before edging Nansemond Suffolk Academy — the third ranked team in the Division 2 state poll — 63-58 two weeks later.
Tough matchups lie ahead also as WCA travels to play annual state power St. Anne’s Belfield (Charlottesville), currently seeded No. 2 in Division I, this SAturday. The Eagles also have a showdown with Miller School, ranked directly behind the Eagles at No. 2 in Division 2, on Saturday, Jan. 25 at home.
Also in Division 2, Hampton Roads Academy (5-4) is ranked No. 5 while Walsingham (9-4) holds the final state tournament berth at No. 8.
On the boys side, Walsingham (7-4) is ranked No. 5 in Division 2 while WCA enters at No. 3 in Division 3.
