Three Tribe Basketball Players Garner CAA Weekly Honors

William and Mary women’s basketball freshman Latrice Hunter was named Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week, the CAA announced Monday afternoon.

Hunter  poured in a career-high 17 points against North Carolina A&T on Friday Jan. 3. She shot 5-of-7 (71.4 percent) from the floor and a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe, which ties the school record for single-game free throw percentage.

The Norfolk native has scored in double-figures in each of the Tribe’s last three contests, setting a new career high each game. During the stretch, Hunter is averaging 12.7 points per game.

Last spring, Hunter guided Norfolk Christian Academy to a 36-31 victory over Williamsburg Christian Academy in the VISAA Division II state championship game.

It is the second time this season a Tribe player has been honored with a Rookie of the Week citation. Freshman Marlena Tremba was named CAA Rookie of the Week for the week of Dec. 30.

Hunter and the rest of the Tribe returns to action with the CAA opener against defending league champion Delaware on Thursday. Tipoff from Kaplan Arena is set for 7 p.m.

Thornton, Prewitt Garner Weekly Honors for Tribe Men’s Hoops

William and Mary men’s basketball junior Marcus Thornton and freshman Omar Prewitt bother garnered Colonial Athletic Association weekly honors the league announced Monday. Thornton was named the league’s Player of the Week for the fourth time in his career and the first this season, while Prewitt was selected as the Rookie of the Week for the fifth time in his freshman campaign. The duo led W&M to a pair of victories during the week, knocking off rival Old Dominion, 74-68, and bouncing Western Illinois, 78-67, on the road.

Thornton, who shared the player of the week award with College of Charleston’s Willis Hall, led the way for the Tribe, turning in an all-around stellar week. He averaged 25.5 points, four rebounds, 4.5 assists and two steals in the victories over ODU and WIU. Prewitt continued to dominate the award on the rookie side, averaging 14.5 points, five rebounds and two assists per game during the week. Prewitt also won the CAA Rookie of the Week on Nov. 18, Nov. 25, Dec. 2 and Dec. 23.

In the win over the Monarchs, Thornton scored 22 of his 26 points in the second half in W&M’s third straight triumph over Old Dominion. He also finished with three assists and three steals against the Monarchs, while knocking down 11-of-15 from the free throw line. Prewitt scored 11 points off the bench in the victory over ODU on a 3-of-4 effort from 3-point range.

At Western Illinois, Prewitt just missed a double-double with 18 points and a career-high eight rebounds. He added three assists and was 8-of-10 from the free throw line vs. the Leathernecks. Thornton scored 15 first-half points in helping W&M turn a nine-point deficit at WIU into a three-point halftime advantage. He finished with 25 points against the Leathernecks and equaled career-highs with six assists and six rebounds. Thornton canned 5-of-9 from 3-point range against the Leathernecks.

Both Thornton and Prewitt rank among the CAA leaders in a number of categories. Thornton, who ranks 45th nationally in scoring, leads the league at 19.5 points per game. He is second in the CAA and 35th nationally in 3-pointers made per game (2.9), while ranking fourth in the league in minutes played (35.9), seventh in 3-point percentage (.369), eighth in free throw percentage (.756), 10th in assists per game (2.8) and 11th in field goal percentage (.417).

Prewitt leads CAA rookies in seven categories, while ranking among the league leaders in eight. He tops league freshman in both scoring (14.1) and rebounding (5.0), while ranking 11th and 18th in the league, respectively. Prewitt is second in the CAA in free throw percentage (.794), sixth in 3-point percentage (.391), eighth in both field goal (.462) and 3-pointers made (1.9), 11th in steals (1.0) and 15th in blocked shots (0.7).

Thornton, Prewitt and the Tribe returns to action and opens Colonial Athletic Association play against Drexel on Wednesday. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. from Kaplan Arena, and the live HD video stream will be available on TribeAthletics.com.
