Jamestown High’s golf team began its quest for a third state golf title in five years on Monday and put themselves in excellent shape to finish the job on Tuesday with a strong opening round at Heritage Oaks Golf Course in Harrisonburg.

Christina Herbert, one of three Jamestown golfers to shoot in the 70s, led the way with a three-over-par 73 as the Eagles carded a four-player aggregate score of 302. Herbert is one stroke off the individual lead behind Dominion’s Erik Dulik, who finished at two-over 72 on Monday.

Trevor Tremps (75) Matt Meadows (76) and Emily Salamy (78) all chipped in with solid rounds to help Jamestown gain a narrow lead in the team race over Jefferson Forrest (304) and Powhatan (306) heading into Tuesday.

“It’s anybody’s ball game tomorrow,” Jamestown coach Doug Meredith said in a text message following Monday’s round.
