There was no shortage of extraordinary highlights Monday as the final Bay Rivers District track and field championship meet was held at Bailey Field.
While Lafayette’s boys and girls swept the team titles – Lafayette’s boys edged runner-up Smithfield 146.50-122 while the Lafayette girls outlasted co-favorite Tabb 94.50-75 – neither outcome was as impressive as some of the individual accomplishments.
Grafton’s Rachel Rabbitt gave perhaps the most exceptional effort of the day, winning both the girls’ 1600 and 3200 in record time. Rabbitt ran a 5:05.32 in the 1600 before blistering the track in the 3200 finishing in 10:57.88, nearly 50 seconds ahead of Bruton’s Carley Shannon (11:46.12) in second place.
Also on the girls’ side, Lafayette’s Deborah Allison helped carry the Rams to victory by winning four different individual events – long jump (16-07.50), triple jump (35-05.50), 100 meter hurdles (15.57) and 300 meter hurdles (47.32). She also ran a leg in the Rams’ 4×400 relay team, which placed fourth.
Perhaps the most impressive feat on the boys’ side was given by Warhill’s 4×800 unit, which didn’t just shave a few seconds off their seed time (8:16.16), but shattered it.
The Lions’ foursome entered Monday just tenths of a second off a state qualifying time, which Warhill coach Dan Stebbins said served as motivation, and they responded by finishing 12 seconds faster than the previous school record in 8:03.69, thanks largely to sophomore standout Christopher Short, who ran the anchor leg in an remarkable 1:53.40.
“They ran a really smart race,” said Stebbins, who afterwards was named district Coach of the Year along with Grafton girls coach Christine Pregler. “If you put Chris [Short] in a position to make a difference, he usually does.”
Warhill’s girls also got a notable effort from Atashia Wells, who edged favored Brittni King by a whisker, 58.78-58.93, to win the 400.
Three other meet records fell Monday: Bruton’s Kayla Jones won the girls’ discus throw (114-03), Kathryn Tomzcak won the girls’ pole vault (11-00) and Derek Holdsworth took the boys’ 800 (1:54.60).
Athlete of the year awards were given to Smithfield’s Marquis Childress and Kurtis Steck in boys and Rabbitt on the girls’ side.
Childress, who’s headed to Hampton University on full scholarship, kept the Packers in contention Monday winning three events – the long (21-09.50), high (6-02) and triple (46-02) jumps – while Steck helped the Rams clinch the team title by winning the 3200 (9:54.02) in one of the final events of the day.
Lafayette head coach Mel Jones called it a “blessing” to see his boys and girls prevail as the final Bay Rivers District champions.
“This is a special group because they love to see each other do well,” Jones said. “We don’t use the words about I, me and my; we talk about we, us and our. Because none of us are as good as all of us.”
The top six individuals and top three relay teams in each event will advance to compete at next Thursday’s Region I meet at Culpeper High School, along with any other individuals who met qualifying times during the regular season.
