Game On: Plenty to Play For on Final Day of Bay Rivers Baseball, Softball Regular Season

The final day of the Bay Rivers baseball and softball regular season has arrived, and there’s a chance both races could end with two teams sharing the district crown.

New Kent and Warhill baseball each enter Tuesday at 13-4 in the district with winnable matchups against Bruton (0-17 BRD) and Jamestown (5-12 BRD), respectively.

Should both win, they would then tie for the district title, marking the second-straight shared crown for Warhill – who was co-champs along with Grafton and York last spring – and the first title – shared or outright – for New Kent since joining the Bay Rivers District 13 years ago.

Two other important baseball games to monitor are Lafayette at Poquoson and York vs. Grafton. York and Lafayette are currently tied for third place in the district at 12-5, with Grafton lurking a game back at 11-6.

The softball title will come down to the Tabb-Smithfield showdown at Smithfield High.

The Tigers, who are one of just two teams to defeat star Sydney Gay and the Packers this season, enter Tuesday at 14-3 in the BRD with Smithfield holding a one-game lead at 15-2.

Prior to Monday, a Tabb victory would have meant a potential three-way tie for the title with New Kent joining the party, but the Trojans (13-4 BRD) dropped out of contention after losing to Poquoson, 6-4, in extra innings Monday.
