Grafton High continues its push toward another strong finish in the VHSL’s annual Wells Fargo Cup standings for athletics.
The Wells Fargo Cup is awarded each year to one Group A, AA and AAA school that finishes highest amongst all other schools in its class in the state based on a points system that awards 50 points to state champions. A school receives 15 points for an eighth-place finish, 20 for seventh, 25 for sixth and so on.
After a successful recently completed winter season, Grafton held on to its spot atop the Group AA standings with 235 points –15 ahead of Western Albermarle (220) – heading into the final spring season.
The Clippers, who finished runner-up in last year’s cup standings – the highest-ever finish in school history – led all Group AA schools with 117.5 points after the fall season this school year.
Grafton’s winter season, in which the school repeated with 117.5 points, was highlighted by the Clippers boys basketball team finishing runner-up in the Division 3 state tournament. Grafton also earned points in girls basketball, boys swimming and indoor track.
Clippers athletic director Laura Sutton says her fingers are crossed that the school can hold on for its first-ever Cup championship in the last year of Group AA existence since the VHSL’s new reclassification will go into effect beginning next fall.
The last Bay Rivers school to win the Cup was Jamestown in 2001.
