BASEBALL
York 8 Poquoson 4
Brandon Harvell (2-3) scored two runs and drove in two more in addition to picking up the save on the mound as York jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings and held on to beat host Poquoson 8-4. Dalton Dye (2-0) picked up his second pitching win of the season while Trevor Kelly, Coleman Ingram and Nick Hornung recorded two hits apiece for the Falcons, who improved to a Bay Rivers District-best 5-0 on the season.
Grafton 9 Smithfield 4
Trailing visiting Smithfield 4-3 in the sixth inning, Grafton rallied for six runs in the bottom of the frame to come-from-behind and beat the Packers 9-4. Dylan Bartells (3-3), Nathan Hicks (3-4) and Gray Harris (3-4) each finished with three hits at the plate while Nic Kurz (1-3) and Lane Deaver (2-4) drove in three runs apiece for the Clippers, who improved to 3-2 in the BRD with the win.
New Kent 6 Jamestown 3
Jamestown cooled off after scoring three runs in the first inning before falling to New Kent on the road, 6-3. Matt Perry (2-4, run, RBI) and Austin Carter (2-3, run) finished with a pair of hits for the Eagles (1-4), who suffered their fourth-consecutive loss following a 1-0 start to the season.
Warhill 5 Lafayette 3
Warhill’s baseball team handed Lafayette its first loss of the season Wednesday thanks to a fourth-inning rally in which the Lions capitalized on several Rams errors en route to a 5-3 win. Warhill starting pitcher Michael Brumfield was excellent again, but so was the Rams’ Daniel Blankenship. Click here for the complete story.
SOFTBALL
York 7 Poquoson 0
Freshman Mollie Rogerson pitched all seven innings yielding eight hits but allowed no runs as York earned a 7-0 shutout at Poquoson. Mollie’s older sister, Maddie Rogerson, capped off a strong day at the plate for York with a homerun in the seventh inning. Lia Batchelor (2-4) scored two runs for the Falcons, who improved to 4-1 on the season with the win.
Smithfield 4 Grafton 1
Sydney Gay won her fifth-consecutive start striking out 16 batters as first-place Smithfield improved to a Bay Rivers District-best 5-0. Grafton (2-3) scored its only run in the bottom of the fourth inning on a Jessica Sprouse (1-3) base hit that scored Emily Beyer (1-3).
BOYS SOCCER
Smithfield 7 Bruton 3
The Smithfield Packers notched a 7-3 win over the Bruton Panthers in both teams’ first Bay Rivers District contest of the season. Forrest Copeland led the Packers in scoring with three goals, with Hunter Vaughn adding two more and Davison Ippolito and Will Healy each tacking on a goal of their own. Smithfield’s Noah Sauber had four saves, and Joseph Mejia had one. Hunter Embry scored two of the Panthers’ goals and tallied an assist. Elijah Rice scored the last goal for Bruton, breaking his leg in the process. Andrew Maeso also had an assist for the Panthers. The Panthers’ Oliver Wells nabbed five saves, and Zach Ellis had three. Smithfield improves its overall record to 4-1, while Bruton now stands at 1-2.
