For the first time since veteran head coach Billy Barnes can remember, Walsingham’s boys basketball team has earned a No. 1 ranking is the latest VISAA Division II state poll released earlier this week.
Barnes recalls his program once being ranked near the top of Division II sometime in the early 90s, but says he’s not sure if any since have been recognized as the state’s best team.
The Trojans, who began the season ranked No. 2 in Division II behind Virginia Episcopal, have posted a 15-2 overall record so far this season and are off to a 2-0 start in Tidewater Conference play.
On the girls’ side, defending Division III state champion Williamsburg Christian Academy remains the No. 1 ranked program in Division II.
Competing in their first season in Division II, the Eagles have posted a 17-5 record thus far and have cruised to an 8-0 mark in Metro Conference play.
The Eagles face one of their toughest tests of the season on Friday when they travel to Charlottesville to take on state power Miller School for a battle between the top two ranked programs in DII.
