After losing to Smithfield by nearly 30 points, 55-28, on the road earlier this season, Jamestown girls basketball coach Mary Glisan said her Eagles weren’t discouraged entering Thursday’s Bay Rivers District rematch with the Packers.
Playing on their home court, Jamestown’s confidence showed as the Eagles, thanks largely to a 25-point effort from point guard Aaliyah Lyttle, upset second-place Smithfield 34-24 Thursday.
“My girls did not want to be embarrassed at home,” Glisan said after the game. “They had the confidence they could win and executed the game plan to perfection.
“I was very proud of their effort, patience and belief in themselves.”
With the victory, Jamestown (8-5, 7-4 BRD) moves a half-game back of Smithfield (7-3 BRD) and a full game back of Lafayette (8-3 BRD), which are second and third behind unbeaten Grafton (11-0) in the district standings.
