Last year, Grafton High was awarded its most successful collective athletic season in school history after finishing runner-up in the final Wells Fargo Cup standings.
The Clippers are positioning themselves for another run at history in 2013.
Following a strong fall season that produced state runner-up finishes in girls cross country and cheerleading to go along with a quarterfinal finish in field hockey, Grafton leads all Group AA schools in the state with 117.5 points heading into the winter season. Current runner-up Hidden Valley is 12 points off the lead with 105.
The Walls Fargo Cup is awarded each year to one Group A, AA and AAA school that finishes highest amongst all other schools in its class in the state based on a points system that awards 50 points to state champions. A school receives 15 points for an eighth-place finish, 20 for seventh, 25 for sixth and so on.
The last Bay Rivers school to win the Cup was Jamestown in 2001.
