Game On: Hornsby Heating Up

Williamsburg native and former Hampton Roads Academy basketball star Keith Hornsby made just one start in 34 games for UNC Asheville’s men’s basketball team last season.

Hornsby spent three seasons at HRA before transferring to national hoops academy Oak Hill. He appears to be transitioning just fine into a starting role as a sophomore guard for the Bulldogs this season.

Hornsby has started all 11 games for UNC Asheville this season and, following an outstanding two-game stretch last week that earned him a pair of weekly honors, is second on the team in scoring at 13.6 points per contest.

Hornsby was named the Big South Conference’s Player of the Week on Monday for his performance from December 10-16 in which the Bulldogs went 1-1. Hornsby, who averaged 23.5 points on 68% shooting from the floor and better than 70% from long range during the two-game span, was additionally named the Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina Athlete of the Week.

Hornsby tied a career high with 21 points to go along with five rebounds, four assists and two steals in UNCA’s 66-55 victory over  Lenoir-Rhyne, but saved his best performance for Saturday’s contest in Columbus, Ohio against national powerhouse Ohio State.

Hornsby erupted for a career-high 26 points on 6-8 shooting from beyond the arc in a 90-72 loss against the No. 7 ranked Buckeyes over the weekend.

Hornsby is showing no signs of slowing down, either.

Hornsby scored 15 points, hauled in six rebounds and dished out two assists in UNCA’s third win of the season, a 79-73 victory, against Northeastern Tuesday afternoon.

Hornsby is the son of  Bruce and Kathy Hornsby of Williamsburg.
