Here’s a bit of inspiration for the local runners competing in Friday’s Region I cross country meet in the Fredericksburg.
While the Bay Rivers has long been considered a cross country powerhouse at the state level, it appears local runners are carrying that trend to the collegiate level as well.
Take a quick look at the results from the ACC cross country championships from last weekend, and you’ll notice three out of the top five finishers – including the champion – hail from the B-R-D.
Tabb High graduate Will Mulherin, now a senior at Virginia Tech, was crowned the ACC champion last weekend after completing Smithfield Plantation’s hilly 8K course in Blacksburg in 23 minutes and 37 seconds. Mulherin’s finish also helped to the Hokies to their first team championship.
Former Jamestown High standout Andrew Colley, now a junior at N.C. State, finished third at 23:43 while University of Virginia freshman Kyle King, formerly of Grafton High, placed fifth (23:51).
After upsetting Colley to win the 2007 regional title his senior season at Tabb, Mulherin went on to place third in state. Colley finished second in the state in 2007 before capturing gold his senior year in 2008.
King, who graduated from Grafton in 2011, was a two-time state cross country champion in 2009 and 2010 and also captured an indoor state track title in the 1,000-meter run his senior year.
