STATEWIDE — In an effort to free up appointment slots and create additional service opportunities, the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will begin letting customers drop off title applications for processing, beginning Monday, Aug. 16.

Currently, anyone who purchases a vehicle from individual or business that is not dealer, better known as a casual sale, has to apply for a state title by mailing the application in, or by making an appointment at a DMV branch.

Starting Monday, customers will be able to bring applications and supporting documents to a DMV office where a staff member will make sure that everything in the application is in order and issue the customer a receipt. The application will then be processed within five business days and the credential will either be mailed to the customer or they can come and pick it up from the same DMV office.

“As we continue to migrate services online and reinvent the traditional ways of conducting DMV business, we are creating more efficient service options for Virginians,” said DMV Commissioner Richard D. Holcomb. “The ability to drop off titling applications and payment will provide a convenient way for more Virginians to access critical DMV services.”

Payment is required when the application is submitted. Click here for fee information. For more information on dropping off title applications or on titles as a whole, check out the DMV website.
