WILLIAMSBURG — Williamsburg Area Meals on Wheels announced its Annual Holiday Fundraiser, a special initiative to raise funds to provide meals for those who need it most in the community.
“We have a lot of clients that are on such a fixed income with social security, and with the increase in prices, they have to make some really tough decisions. Do I get this at the grocery store or do I pay for medication? Do I get eggs? They’re expensive this week, I can’t, ” said Catherine Upton, the Executive Director for Williamsburg Area Meals on Wheels.
Upton said that all the money raised this time of year not only continues to feed clients currently enrolled in the program, but also removes the need from having to put anyone on a waitlist for food.
This year’s campaign has been named “End the Wait” in honor of the goal of ending the waitlist for the program. Donations can be made online, or can be mailed to PO Box 709, Williamsburg, VA 23187.
“I’d like to think it is extremely important,” Upton explained. “Besides our clients getting food, they’re also seeing a friendly face. They’re being checked on. You know, you’ve got an elderly parent living in a community, and you live hundreds of miles away, I think it’s a blessing to have somebody check in and letting us know that they’re okay, or in the event that they find one of our clients in distress, we’re able to intercede very quickly on behalf of the family.”
“So it’s always so much more than a meal. It’s comfort, care and absolute connection in our community,” she added.
