William “Bill” Charles Mee, 79, of Yorktown, Virginia, passed away at his home on Tuesday, September 29, 2026.
Bill was born in Washington, DC, to Lt. Col. William H. Mee and Ruth Julie Mee, the oldest of four siblings. He grew up traveling the world with his Air Force family, living in Italy, Turkey, and Germany, and then returning to the United States. Those experiences sparked a love of travel, history, discovery, and he carried that curiosity with him throughout his life. Bill could tell a good story or share an anecdote about nearly anywhere, whether he had lived there, traveled there, or was planning a trip there.
Bill graduated in 1965 from Forrest Sherman High School in Naples, Italy. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a Master of Public Administration from Old Dominion University. In 1970, Bill began a successful 43-year civil service career with the Department of the Army as Management Analyst and Chief of Budget and Manpower.
After retiring from Fort Monroe, Bill had more time to enjoy the things he loved most: dancing, reading, and traveling to visit friends and family. If there was live music or dancing nearby, there was a good chance you would find Bill tapping his knee to the beat or out on the dance floor. He made many great friends through his longtime membership in the Tidewater Catholic Singles Club.
Bill loved watching sports and cheered on the Boston Red Sox, Norfolk Tides, Peninsula Pilots, Washington Redskins, and the ODU Monarchs. He was a history buff and an avid reader who enjoyed comparing what he learned with his brothers. He spent many hours honing his virtual piloting skills through flight simulator games. Whenever someone shared upcoming travel plans with Bill, he would often fire up his flight simulator and fly there virtually first. He approached life with kindness, levity, and an eagerness to learn and had a gift for finding something interesting in almost any place, person, or conversation.
Most importantly, Bill was a devoted son, brother, cousin, uncle, friend, and neighbor. He is survived by his brother, Michael Mee (Judi) of Newport News, Virginia; his brother-in-law, Gary Sager of Yorktown, Virginia; his nieces, Sarah Bowman (George) of Yorktown, Virginia, Katie Brown (Brooks) of Knoxville, Tennessee, Meghan McMahon (Bobby) of Richmond, Virginia, and Erin Mee of Aldie, Virginia; his nephews, Brendon Mee (Stephanie) of Jacksonville, Florida, and Elliot Mee (Lauren) of Springfield, Virginia and his great-nieces and great-nephews, Luna, Emma, Krista, Ryan, Riley, Tommy, Julia, Avery, and Lily.
Bill was reunited in Heaven with his parents, William and Ruth Mee; his brother, Daniel Joseph Mee and his sister, Julie Mee Sager.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 6, 2026 at Weymouth Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 7, 2026 in the funeral home chapel with interment to immediately follow at Peninsula Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Julie Sager Memorial Scholarship Fund, in memory of Bill, through the York Foundation for Public Education.
