Myrtle Christine Butler Moore, 101 years old, passed away at home August 22, 2026, with family by her side.
She was born December 22, 1924, in Roanoke Virginia, and came to the peninsula in 1942 during WWII as a telephone operator at Camp Patrick Henry, a deportation camp for troops during the war. After the war she worked for the government as a telephone operator and supervisor at Cheatham Annex and Navel Weapons Station retiring after 30 plus years.
She met and married Clyde Thomas Moore in 1943, a marriage that lasted 72 years until his death in 2015.
She is survived by her daughter, Sylvia M. Virostek, granddaughter Kelli V. Smith and husband Michael, great grandsons, Christian Brady Smith and Grant Thomas Smith and five nephews and their families, and multiple family member from her husband’s side of the family.
She is preceded in death by her husband, C.T. Moore, son-in-law, C. J. Virostek, Jr., grandson, Bradley Thomas Virostek, and her sister and brother.
Myrtle was a devout Christian and active member of Providence United Methodist Church in Yorktown Va. She was also a member of Beta Signa Phi Society, Chapter Beta Tau. She found joy in her family, friends and her home. Through her generous hospitality she shared her love of cooking, baking pies and crafts.
A graveside service will be held at Providence United Methodist Church, 113 Old Dare Road, Yorktown at noon on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, with lunch following in the church social hall.
