Josephine Holmes Carter, a woman of deep faith, quiet strength, and enduring service, was called to eternal rest on August 9, 2026, at the age of 84. She was born on December 21, 1941, to the late Dorothy Virginia Holmes Byrd.
Josephine attended Bruton Heights and later received her GED. She worked for over twenty years as a CNA and was also a bus aide for the Williamsburg-James City County School Division.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert H. Carter; son, Robert E. Washington; and stepfather, Herman Byrd.
Josephine’s memory and legacy will forever remain with her sons, James R. Washington and Christopher S. Washington; daughter, Sheila A. Washington; stepson, Robert H. Carter Jr.; grandkids, Laporshia Washington and Stephen J Mayo; great-grandchildren, Damajah Washington, Saniyah M. Washington, and Jamel M Mayo; and great-great-grandkid, Zuriyah N. Washington.
