Garland Melvin Hazelwood, 79, of Lanexa, Virginia passed into the hands of the Lord on Monday, June 29, 2026. Garland was born on August 3, 1946, to Melvin and Pauline Hazelwood. Growing up, he attended Liberty Baptist Church in Lanexa, Virginia.
Later in life, he became an active member of York River Baptist Church, in Williamsburg, Virginia. Garland owned and operated a fish house alongside his father, Pete and brother, Glenn, Hazelwood Brothers Seafood, until 1996. After closing, Garland and his cousin, Roy Jr., then operated Hazelwood Home Improvements, where he worked as a carpenter for 25 years. Outside of his work, Garland spent much of his free time outdoors. You could often find him deer hunting in the woods or sitting in the truck with his friend Buster shelling peanuts. He loved fishing for catfish out on the Chickahominy. He served as President of the Diascund Hunt Club, where he was a dedicated leader and deeply valued the lifelong friendships and camaraderie he shared with his fellow members.
Garland enjoyed gardening and grilling, but above all else, he loved his family. He treasured every moment spent with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild, especially the holidays they shared together — those gatherings meant everything to him.
Garland was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin R. Hazelwood and Pauline M. Hazelwood.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 57 years, Deby Hazelwood; two daughters, Niki Hazelwood (Scott Moore) and Paula Mireles (Eric); grandchildren, Trey Cook (Tahlia), Ryan Cook (Chloe Morris), and Amelie Mireles; a great granddaughter, Chenoa Cook; his brother, Glenn D. Hazelwood (Brenda Wright); two nieces, one nephew, many cousins, and friends.
A memorial service will be held 11 AM, Saturday, July 11, 2026, at Vincent Funeral Home, 9923 Pocahontas Trail, Providence Forge, VA 23140. The family will receive friends half an hour prior to services.
