Michael Christian Barnhill, 36, passed away at his home on June 1, 2026, as a result of recurring epilepsy. Michael was born in Newport News, Virginia, the fifth child and second son of Ronald and Jeanne Barnhill.
Diagnosed with epilepsy as a child, Michael faced many challenges throughout his life that he worked extremely hard to overcome. Grounded in deep faith, he met every obstacle with optimism, resolve, and true belief that his life had purpose.
He channeled his love of cars and mechanical tinkering into becoming a master welder, known for his precision, attention to detail, and high-caliber finished work. He worked for over a decade at Newport News Shipbuilding, later spending time at NASA, where he contributed to experimental welding techniques.
Despite the obstacles he faced when it came to understanding and managing his epilepsy, Michael was doggedly resilient and determined to build a life he was proud of. He created a lovely home filled with comfort, routine, and the finer things he had come to appreciate. He enjoyed cooking healthy meals and keeping his car — his pride and joy — spotless. He loved children and could often be found at family gatherings carrying nieces and nephews atop his 6’3” shoulders.
While epilepsy shaped many parts of Michael’s life, it never defined him. His faith did. He will be remembered for his perseverance, craftsmanship, and quick-witted humor. Michael was preceded in death by his beloved father, Ronnie. He is survived, celebrated, and dearly missed by his mother, Jeanne, and his six siblings and their spouses — Jeannette and Seamus; Ronnie and Kristy; Christine and Larry; Faith Anne and Tyler; Daniel and Sarah; and Grace and Connor (fiancé); as well as six nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Michael’s memory to the Epilepsy Foundation.
