With deep love and gratitude for a life well lived, we announce the passing of Flora Mullen on June 13, 2026, at the age of 82.
Flora was born on December 15, 1943, in San Mateo, New Mexico, at her family home on the Floyd Lee Ranch. She was the daughter of Mary Jenia Gonzales and Santiago Luis Gonzales and was one of sixteen children, the sixth oldest in a large, loving family. She graduated from Grants High School in 1961 and carried throughout her life the strong work ethic, faith, and devotion to family that were instilled in her from an early age.
In 1962, she married James “Jim” Shuck after a whirlwind courtship. Together they shared 34 years of marriage and raised two daughters, Tammy and Carol. Jim passed away in 1996. In November 2000, Flora married the love of her later years, John Mullen. They shared nearly 26 wonderful years together. John faithfully honored his vows of “in sickness and in health,” lovingly caring for Flora and ensuring she remained at home surrounded by comfort, dignity, and love throughout her final years.
Flora was an accomplished entrepreneur whose determination and leadership inspired many. She became a beautician in the mid-1970s and founded Hillside Beauty Salon, operating it from her family home so she could be present for her daughters as they grew up. Alongside Jim, she helped build Jim’s Well Drilling, becoming deeply involved in every aspect of the business. After Jim’s passing, Flora demonstrated remarkable strength by studying for and passing the contractor certification exam, allowing her to become a licensed contractor and continue operating the business. After her marriage to John, he joined her in the company until their retirement. Their legacy continues today, as Jim’s Well Drilling still serves the community. Flora also broke barriers as the first female president of the Virginia Water Well Association and served as president of the Women’s Aglow Christian Fellowship, reflecting both her leadership abilities and her unwavering faith.
Her greatest joys in life were her family, her faith, and caring for others. Flora loved playing Scrabble, fishing, attending church, cooking, planning family gatherings, and traveling to visit loved ones in New Mexico and Florida. She had a gift for making every holiday and celebration memorable. Whether preparing a special meal, organizing an event, or simply opening her home to someone in need, Flora made everyone feel welcome and loved. Her generosity knew no bounds. She regularly visited the sick and elderly, encouraged those facing difficult times, and often provided shelter and support to individuals and families who needed a helping hand. To many, she was a living example of God’s love in action. Flora and John also shared a passion for travel, hot rods, and car shows. Together they enjoyed participating with their racing team in the XO/PP 640 H.A.M.B. Special truck at Bonneville, where they helped achieve a world record. Their adventures created cherished memories and lasting friendships.
Flora was preceded in death by her parents, Mary J. Gonzales and Santiago L. Gonzales; her former husband, James Shuck; her daughter, Tammy Rojek; her step-son, Dave Gabler; her brothers and sisters Antonio “Tony” Gonzales, Fred Gonzales, and Mary Ellen Gonzales; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews. She is survived by her devoted husband, John Mullen; her daughter, Carol Marley; her stepdaughters, Tracie Daniels-Boze, Lisa Gabler DeWald, and Kelly Carter; her siblings Rosita, Dorella, Jimmy, Merla, Angela, Marie, Albert, Abie, David, Eduardo, Emily, and Claire; along with many cherished grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends whose lives were enriched by her love.
Flora will be remembered for her strength, faith, generosity, and unwavering devotion to her family. Her kindness touched countless lives, and her legacy of love, service, and perseverance will continue to inspire all who knew her.
Though her physical presence is gone, the love she shared, the lives she touched, and the faith she exemplified will remain forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
